You might be writing several posts daily or regularly. Whenever you write a post you have to specify many columns and fill in various data among which one is “TAGS”. Its a boring job to fill tags in posts as many tags can be put in a post and list can be very long. So what to do? Is there anyway to do this automatically? Hm….Yes there is!! There is a plugin available that will auto-tag all your posts. The plugin’s name is AutoTagger.

Autotagger is a plugin which will automatically tag all your posts. It uses a given set of keywords or tags as specified in its options. It searches the document for related words. If it finds the word given in the options in that post, the post will be given that tag. This is a very useful plugin and saves a lot of  time. It compares words in a predefined tag list to words in a post, and tag the post with the matching words.

Features Of This Plugin:

• Uses a predefined tag list to autotag posts with matching words while saving or publishing.
• Re-tag entire database with a single click, making use of the Append or Replace (Or neither) option.
• Hook into Autotagger via the action ‘tag_posts’ and use the predefined tag list to tag all posts without tags in the blog’s database.

This is a great plugin indeed! This plugin hasn’t been updated since months, that’s the only problem you might think. But this isn’t any problem!! I’ve been running this plugin on my blog and its working perfectly, the way I would have liked it to work. It never causes any problems to me and is very fast.

Here Are Some Instructions That Will Help You Get Started:

Installation:

1.) Download AutoTagger from here.

2.) Unzip the downloaded file and upload the entire folder to the ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory.

3.) Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.

Configuration:

1.) Go to the ‘Settings’ menu and click on ‘Autotagger’.

2.) In first column named “Tag List”,  add your desired tag list. (Keep it short and add useful tags only. Don’t use words such as ‘and’, ‘or’,’ but’, etc.)

3.) Next option is “Use Titles”. Select this option to use post titles as tags. I have switched this off as I don’t find it practical using it. Your choice may be different. You may or may not use this feature.

4.) Next option is “Use Categories”. Select this option to use post categories as tags. You may switch on this option. Switching this option is good if you want to reduce some work typing categories in tags list.

5.) Next option is “Tag Mode”. Select the required option.

• Nothing – Leave post’s existing tags as is. Does nothing with Tag List.
• Append – Leave post’s existing tags as is. Add Tag List matches to post’s tags.
• Replace – Delete post’s existing tags. Add Tag List matches to post’s tags.

Here I have selected the “Replace” option.

6.) Next option is “Include Pages”. Select this option to have Pages auto-tagged as well as Posts. I’ve switched on this option.

7.) When you are done with the options page, go to Tools Menu –> Autotagger.

8.) Click on “Autotag All Posts”. In addition to the auto-tagging done to a single post/page at the time of saving/publishing, and the auto-tagging of tagless posts that can be setup to run on a recurring schedule, Autotagger can re-tag every single post/page on your blog with a single click.

This will use the Tag List, Tag Mode, and other options as set on Autotagger’s Settings page; So don’t forget to double-check the settings prior to running this to avoid problems later.
