What is a Sitemap?
Basically a Sitemap is a list of links to pages of a Website all arranged in one place. This helps users and Search engine crawlers to access and navigate the content of the website easily.
How will sitemap help your blog?
Having a sitemap helps Search engine bots to access the content and This can help your website/blog in getting high Page Rank, And high Page Rank means High Traffic to your blog. This is a good SEO technique and it increases your chances for your Blog content to be on first page of major search engines.
Submitting Sitemap to Google
If you haven’t submitted Sitemap for your blog yet then this article will show you ‘How to submit sitemap to Google‘.
Step 1: Go to Google Webmaster tools and register an account. If you already have a Webmasters tools account then skip this step.
Step 2: Once you registered with Webmaster tools, Login to your Account.
Step 3: Now click on ‘Add a Site’ button and Enter the URL of your Blog/site
(eg: www.yoursite.com) and then click on ‘Continue’.
Step 4: Now you’ll have to Verify your blog ownership, This can be done in two ways. They are
1) Uploading HTML file to your Server:
In this method, you’ll have to upload an HTML file provided by google to your server.
2) Alternate Methods
There are three alternate and easier ways to verify ownership.
- Adding Meta Tag: In this method, you’ll have to add a script given by google in your HTML template. The Meta tag should be placed in between and
- Using Google Analytics account: If your blog/site already has a Google Analytics tracking code, then you can use this option to verify ownership.
- Add a DNS record to your domain’s configuration: For this you’ll have to sign in to your domain registrar or hosting provider and add a new DNS code that proves to Google that you own domain.
Step 5: Now verify your site using any of the ways above. I prefer using Meta tag method since it is easier and quicker.
Step 6: Once verified you’ll be able to see your website in your Google webmaster tools account like in below image.
Step 7: Click on ‘Submit a sitemap’ (bottom of dashboard)
and wait for page to open. Now click on ‘Submit a sitemap’ button.
Step 8: Now In new browser or tab go to this Sitemap generator and Enter full URL of your blog/site with a / in end. (eg: http://www.yourdomain.com/) and then click on ‘Create Blogger sitemap’.
Step 9: Copy the generated code under Google
and paste it in you Webmaster tools account.
then click on Submit Sitemap.
Step 10: It may take a few hours for google to accept your sitemap, so check your site status on your webmaster tools account after few hours.
Now Google can crawl your blog/site better and this means better page rank. I also recommend you to submit sitemap to Yahoo and Bing.
