While there are lots of Adsense sizes and Adsense formats available, there are a few which don’t perform at all and there are some which don’t give the results you expect from them. Some among you might ask, the art of making non-performing Adsense ads to perform is called Adsense optimization. Yes, I agree with you; but what if they are simply not ready to give the expected results or perform well as compared to a few other Adsense sizes and formats?
From my 1 and a half-year experience with Adsense, I have found that some Adsense sizes simply don’t perform or perhaps they didn’t perform for me as I expected them to.
Google Adsense Sizes
Here are the Adsense sizes which are available. I have simply named them here. Read on to know which of them performed the way I wanted them to!

- Leaderboard (728 x 90 pixels)
- Banner (468 x 60 pixels)

Google Adsense Sizes That Perform
The simply theory that applies to Google Adsense Sizes that perform is – the bigger gives you better! I mean, the bigger your Adsense ad, the better result it will give you. The simple reason that prove this is, that a bigger size ensures visibility.

Just assume that you are travelling in a car and you see two banners on the road-side – one big and other small. Which one among those two will you read easily? Of course the first one right? Same applies for Adsense ads as well. The bigger the size of the Adsense widget, the more people view it and the more clicks you can expect.
So if this has some truth in it, the following Adsense sizes will perform the best:
- Large Rectangle (336 x 280 pixels)
- Medium Rectangle (300 x 250 pixels)
- Leaderboard (728 x 90 pixels)
- Wide Skyscraper (160 x 600 pixels)
I prefer the first and the third one. The other 2 perform quite good as well! They always give me good results. You can also use link units. All link units work fine and give good results if placed at the proper spots.
And yes the other 8 Adsense ad sizes are equal to waste ;-)

I confirm that the medium and large rectangles are the best performing ads form Google I ever used. Placing is extremely important as well.
Well you’re right. Placement is very important! It can double or even triple your earnings!
Even I prefer the same ….. But sometimes horizontal link units work for me, so they’re worth trying !! Rest are all waste as said by you :-)
For me too :)
I forgot to mention link units actually. I have mentioned them now.
nice to see Google adsense both ad sizes and their ctr in the form of clear infographic picture. :)
I would like to thank Amit of Labnol.org :)
yaa you are right
Great tips to make more money with google adsense. But why you have removed adsense code from your blog?
even though click rate varies for different ad formats, the ad placement should be in correct place other wise we get no clicks. Thanks for sharing the graph
You’re right Pradeep, placement is important!
BTW, this is your first to BJ. Hope to see you back often. :)
Frankly speaking, Adsense wasn’t earning me much. Also I prefer affiliate marketing over Adsense. (Blogging tips niche pays great if clubbed with affiliate).
Still, I may add Adsense soon:)
Adsense is currently my number one income source. So I’m a big fan.
And you are right.. those are the two best performing ad unit for me after I’ve tried several others.
A link unit below nav tab also attracts lots of clicks but with low CPC.
Nice analysis..
Yeah, I have seen many sites use the link unit as well. Even I use it in some of my blogs. It works great! :)
The trick with adsense is to blend your ads in so they look like part of your site, part of your navigation etc. People won’t click on your ads if they stick out like a sore thumb.
nice article..will be using this data to imply adds on my blog..thnx for sharing..
You’re welcome. Do let us know if the sizes worked for you.
Ya saksham you are right large the ads more chance to click. I found Large rectangle and wide skyscraper perform best. Best one is large rectangle above the content fold.
