How To Provide Attribution?

This is the seventh part in the series “Tips For Writing A Good Blog Post”. In the previous part of this series I provide-attributiontold you the importance of choosing an appropriate tone for your blog.

In this post I will explain you how to provide attribution to the posts you have either copied from other sites or blogs or have taken as the reference and be AWAY from big  problems.

Do you ever copy posts from other sites? If not the full post, but at least some part of it? That’s enough to put you in a big problem or you can say a very big problem. Don’t ever take the risk of being accused of violating copyrights, plagiarism or stealing content from another blog or website. If you found information on another blog or website that you want to discuss on your blog make sure that you edit that content to a great extent such that it’s totally different from that similar post. And also do not forget to provide a link back to the original source as you have taken it as the reference.

There are no specific rules on how to provide attribution to the ones content you have copied or taken as the reference.

Common Copying Practices That Are Mostly Done By Bloggers And How To Attribute Them:

1. Copying Images:

If you are using images from other site which you either got from Google Image Search or any other site, the best way is to provide a link back to the original image. This can be done by using the following line, “Image By: Saksham Talwar (Name Of Author) of Blogging Junction (Site Name)”. Give a link to the original image.

2. Copying Full Work:

This isn’t considered a good practice, but if you do this, it needs something more than just attribution. Firstly you need to take permissions from the original author. If he grants you permission to copy the post, you can copy that article with all your agreements. Never forget to take permission from original author before copying his work. This can land you in a trouble.

3. Copying Some Data Or Statistics:

Sometimes you display some sorts of statistics or a data of a survey or any charts, or you display some graphs, do not forget to attribute them.

Example: – If it’s a survey data like, “There are 1, 00, 00, 000 bloggers in the world”, provide a link back to your source i.e. who you know that. It can be done by a simple text message like “Source: Blogging Junction (Your Source)”.

Why Attribute?

Providing good attribution is simply a good practice and are considered to be good manners. If you start doing this you will be a success in blogging.

So do not forget to attribute to the original post or data and be away from problems. Remember,

“Providing Attribution Does Not Reduce Your Respect, Instead Increases It”.

Great article and very true. I see this happen all the time with quotes. So many people think as long as there are quotations around the information it immediately releases them from copyright. When in doubt, always provide a link back or don’t use it. Thanks for the info!

  1. [...] Several things began coming in my mind. I started thinking, I spent so much time writing these articles and that person used them for free! How can they do that? Weren’t they scared? At first I thought that the article might contain only the summary with a link to the full article on my blog. But NO! The article was copied fully and had no links anywhere pointing to my blog! In many of my posts I’ve mentioned not to copy articles, but still these people do! I think he should have published only the summary with a link to my blog. I mean he should have provided attribution. [...]
