How To Attribute To The Original Post?

There are a million ways to attribute to the original post, but anyone one of them cannot be considered the perfect one. So you cannot be sure how to attribute to the original post? Some bloggers like if a link is provided to them i.e. to the original article. But some bloggers don’t like it and think it in a negative way saying that blogger has done this to get a track back link from the original site instead.

I have compiled a list of things that you can do to attribute to the original article or data or image or anything else. Read below to learn more about providing attribution.

1. Provide a link back to the original post.

When you copy a post or in other words content from other blog or site do you ever think how bad it is for you and that site. So in order to respect the original content and its author, please provide a link to the original post. Make sure that the link you provide is clickable. This helps your readers to easily visit the original post and also gives some SEO benefits to the original post.

2. Write a review post about that site.

When you write a review post about the site from where you have copied that content, your readers come to know about that site and the original site can benefit from your content. In this way the original site gets users from your site and it too can benefit from your site as you did from that site.

3. Write a review post about that post in your site.

Actually I don’t stress anyone to do this as this could be a waste with not more benefits. Instead of this you could actually write a link post and link it to the original post. Writing a review post can waste a post of your site, instead you could give a short review (In 50-60 Words) about the original post in the post you have written in your blog.

4. Add that site’s link in your Blogroll i.e. links page of your site and display Blogroll in your site.

This too will benefit the original site like all other tips mentioned above did. It will benefit the original site with traffic and SEO benefits.

5. Add an advertisement banner of that site in your site.

You can alternatively display a banner of the original site in your blog. Although this isn’t a that nice option but it can be used and can still prove useful. No need of putting a large banner ad or displaying the ad banner for the full blog life. A 125px x 125px banner or less displayed for about a month or so is sufficient. I stress on the above options rather than this one.

I like to attribute credit to at least one blog or site per post. I think it is a good way to build a reputable community and a way to foster thought leadership.

I just wish more folks did it and that those that receive links either reciprocate on the favor or at a minimum acknowledge the link with a simple thank you comment. LOL :)

I will link back to the original post. That’s the best way to say ‘thanks’. :)

I always link back to another post whenever appropriate. I have never really considered using any of the other methods you have stated. Occasionally, I may provide a sentence or two describing the source website.
